why back2school?

Why back2school?  That is a great question, and I would like to challenge you and bless you today if that would be possible.

Matthew 19:14  NLT

But Jesus said, “Let the children come to me. Don’t stop them! For the Kingdom of Heaven belongs to those who are like these children.”

For the children!  That is the first and most important answer to the reason of why  we do back2school.  Each student that is part of this outreach will receive a new backpack with school supplies, new shoes and socks as well as hear the Gospel.  We cannot and must not miss the opportunity to tell them about Jesus.

Job 11:18  NLT

Having hope will give you courage. You will be protected and will rest in safety.

For the families!  That is the next reason and just as important as the first.  You have learned this if you are a parent… if you bless my children, you bless me.  When we make an effort to share hope and life with others it goes way beyond the one you share with.  It goes to the people that are around as well as to those they will tell.

1 Thessalonians 2:12  NLT

We pleaded with you, encouraged you, and urged you to live your lives in a way that God would consider worthy. For he called you to share in his Kingdom and glory.

For the kingdom!  It is what we are called to do.  By serving others we are serving God and sharing His kingdom with others.  The most important kingdom of all is God’s, and it grows as we share with others His love and His goodness.

May we be the light and blessing, the conduit of hope and the voice of salvation to those we encounter.

Tomorrow two brand new locations will be serving students.  Next weekend over 10 locations will be serving students.  The following weekend even more students will be served.  It really takes hundreds and hundreds of volunteers, lots of churches and many community partners to see that this outreach project knows as back2school takes place.

This year 15 locations and we hope 4,000 students will be served.  Will you pray for each of these students?

Why back2school?  It is for the children, their families and for the glory of the kingdom of God.  For the last 16 years we have served and over 32,000 students have been part of the process.  Yet it is not those numbers that matter.

The number that matters is one.  We serve because of the One.

Exodus 29:46  NLT

and they will know that I am the Lord their God. I am the one who brought them out of the land of Egypt so that I could live among them. I am the Lord their God.

We do this and encourage others to do this so that God will be lifted up, seen by others.  Why back2school?  Because we deserve to serve God and share Him with others.  Won’t you join us?

Have you heard of EDITH BURNS?

Edith Burns was a wonderful Christian who lived in San Antonio, Texas . She was the patient of a doctor by the name of Will Phillips. Dr. Phillips was a gentle doctor who saw patients as people. His favorite patient was Edith Burns.  One morning he went to his office with a heavy heart and it was because of Edith Burns.  When he walked into that waiting room, there sat Edith with her big black Bible in her lap earnestly talking to a young mother sitting beside her.  Edith Burns had a habit of introducing herself in this way: "Hello, my name is Edith Burns.  Do you believe in Easter?" Then she would explain the meaning of Easter, and many times people would be saved.  Dr. Phillips walked into that office and there he saw the head nurse, Beverly. Beverly had first met Edith when she was taking her blood pressure. Edith began by saying,"My name is Edith Burns. Do you believe in Easter?"  Beverly said, "Why yes I do."  Edith said, "Well, what do you ...

wash feet, sharing hope

John 13:4-5,14 NLT  So he got up from the table, took off his robe, wrapped a towel around his waist, 5 and poured water into a basin. Then he began to wash the disciples’ feet, drying them with the towel he had around him… 14 And since I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you ought to wash each other’s feet. Jesus set the example we follow.  He served.  He valued and gave value to others.  That is why we choose to serve. For 18 years our church has shared an outreach called back2school, and for 16 of those years we have chosen to give students brand new shoes and socks as well as washing their feet.  It is one of the most important parts of this event. Washing feet is a humbling experience where both the give and the receiver learn how to share some moments that might change their lives.  Jesus said we should do this.  See the verse above.  Follow His example, do what He did, and give far more than you will ever know....
