heroes of back2school

I have met a lot of heroes in my life, but some of them aren’t the people you think they might be. Some heroes wear uniforms of various kinds. Some heroes have an extra special talents. But I want to tell you about some other heroes that I know very well.

1 Peter 4:10 NLT

God has given each of you a gift from his great variety of spiritual gifts. Use them well to serve one another.

It is back2school week for so many of our locations, and this week on several days our heroes will be gathering. Would you like to join in?

One place they will gather is at our future campus, 700 Commerce Court in Martinsville, to pack a couple thousand backpacks. Tuesday at 6pm is the place to be and time to be part of.

Another time that heroes will gather is Saturday when the big back2school event is happening. Also Friday afternoon at our church in Collinsville, we will be serving students in each location.

The Dictionary.com website says a hero is a person noted for courageous acts or nobility of character or a person who, in the opinion of others, has special achievements, abilities, or personal qualities and is regarded as a role model or ideal.

I like that. I also like the people who choose to go out of their way to serve others. Often those others are the people who can not do anything in return for those serving.

May we be heroes to others. The back2school project is one of those opportunities where heroes show up and help students find their value. These heroes are giving away one of the most important things in world. Hope.

They are giving away hope to all they serve. Join in. Be a hero. Do what heroes do.

inspiration from C.S. Lewis

There are many people, past and present, who get our attention by what they write or say or share. For me C.S. Lewis is one of those. He was a prolific writer who continues to grab the attention of thinkers from many different points of view. Lewis first grabbed my attention when I was in 5 th grader, and our teacher, Mrs. Foy, shared The Chronicles of Narnia with our class. It was a powerful time that this dreamer opened doors to thinking like I had never lived before. He wrote of faith, of far off places and of strong figures who found their character rooted deep in God. C.S. Lewis was born in 1898 and died in 1963, 7 years before I was born. It wasn’t until his 30’s that under the influence of his friend Tolkien that he came to be a Christian.
