just why?

Just why?  That is a good question that we don’t ask too often.  It is an important question too because we need to understand why we are alive.  Let me work on some examples.

One husband asked his wife why she cuts the turkey in a certain way before cooking it on Thanksgiving.  She said she didn’t know but would ask her mom.  After calling her mom she was told that was the way her grand mother prepared the turkey.  When the mom called grandma, grandma said she cut the turkey like that because years ago the pan she had to bake the turkey was too small for the entire turkey.  Interesting and insightful.

Have you ever wondered, if you have been in church for any length of time, why they cover the serving table before the Lord’s supper or communion?  You know, they used something that looks like a big sheet that covers the bread, the juice and the entire table.  Upon checking in to why someone discovered that the reason the table is covered is because years ago there was no air conditioning in churches, and to keep the flies off the communion elements they would completely cover the table.  Again, interesting and insightful.

Maybe you could come up with some questions of your own.  You know, the stuff that stumps you, the stuff you would like to know.  Ask, just why?

Ask God the same questions about faith.  Many have done that through the years as tough times happen, bad things come up and happen to good people.  Just why?

1 Peter 2:9  NASB

But you are A CHOSEN RACE, A royal PRIESTHOOD, A HOLY NATION, A PEOPLE FOR God's OWN POSSESSION, so that you may proclaim the excellencies of Him who has called you out of darkness into His marvelous light;

You are chosen.  You have been called out of darkness and in to light.

Colossians 1:16  NLT

for through him God created everything in the heavenly realms and on earth. He made the things we can see and the things we can’t see— such as thrones, kingdoms, rulers, and authorities in the unseen world. Everything was created through him and for him.

We were created for Him.  That means we are created to honor God with all we do.

Now for something a little more personal.  I believe I am hear to do this:

Proverbs 31:8-9  NLT

Speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves; ensure justice for those being crushed.  Yes, speak up for the poor and helpless, and see that they get justice.

It is that simple.  That is why I believe I am here.  Just why?  Because I am called to love God and serve others!

NOTE: one week from today I will be on a mission trip in Cuba.  Please pray for the trip and the important meetings taking place over the FCA ministry in Cuba.  If you would like to help, please reach out to me at pastormh@gmail.com

Have you heard of EDITH BURNS?

Edith Burns was a wonderful Christian who lived in San Antonio, Texas . She was the patient of a doctor by the name of Will Phillips. Dr. Phillips was a gentle doctor who saw patients as people. His favorite patient was Edith Burns.  One morning he went to his office with a heavy heart and it was because of Edith Burns.  When he walked into that waiting room, there sat Edith with her big black Bible in her lap earnestly talking to a young mother sitting beside her.  Edith Burns had a habit of introducing herself in this way: "Hello, my name is Edith Burns.  Do you believe in Easter?" Then she would explain the meaning of Easter, and many times people would be saved.  Dr. Phillips walked into that office and there he saw the head nurse, Beverly. Beverly had first met Edith when she was taking her blood pressure. Edith began by saying,"My name is Edith Burns. Do you believe in Easter?"  Beverly said, "Why yes I do."  Edith said, "Well, what do you ...

wash feet, sharing hope

John 13:4-5,14 NLT  So he got up from the table, took off his robe, wrapped a towel around his waist, 5 and poured water into a basin. Then he began to wash the disciples’ feet, drying them with the towel he had around him… 14 And since I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you ought to wash each other’s feet. Jesus set the example we follow.  He served.  He valued and gave value to others.  That is why we choose to serve. For 18 years our church has shared an outreach called back2school, and for 16 of those years we have chosen to give students brand new shoes and socks as well as washing their feet.  It is one of the most important parts of this event. Washing feet is a humbling experience where both the give and the receiver learn how to share some moments that might change their lives.  Jesus said we should do this.  See the verse above.  Follow His example, do what He did, and give far more than you will ever know....
