help for the homeless

Romans 12:13  NLT

When God’s people are in need, be ready to help them. Always be eager to practice hospitality.

There is a need, and you can help make a difference.  Let me share a bit today!

Tuesday at 6pm is a Rally for Homelessness in our community.  You have heard me say before that I am committed to serving those who are homeless in our area, and the time is growing closer that this will become a reality.  Now, we need your help.

This rally will begin at the big chair on Church Street in Uptown Martinsville which is across the street from the former Globeman’s Department Store.  People are asked to gather at 6pm with signs in hand to join voices and with others to walk to the city municipal building asking for funding and to raise awareness of this need.  Will you join me?

Why homelessness?  Because there is a need.  And because people matter to God and should matter to us.

Why homelessness?  Because the need continues to grow by leaps and bounds on a daily basis.

We currently have a shelter for women and children in our community.  We also assist with a warming center in the winter months, but the need for a full-time and large shelter is now.

Let me ask again and on the spiritual side.  Why homelessness?  Again, people matter, and we can and should make a difference.

When our church started in 2006 we knew that God called us to speak up for people and serve those who are in need.  And by serving we would win the right to talk to them about Jesus.  That is exactly what we do when we serve those who are hungry, hurting or homeless.  We are demonstrating the love of God to our community and beyond.  It takes all of us to make this happen.

Proverbs 31:8-9  NLT

Speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves; ensure justice for those being crushed. 9  Yes, speak up for the poor and helpless, and see that they get justice.

Stand up and speak up.  Here is a time and place to do just that.

1 John 3:17  NLT

If someone has enough money to live well and sees a brother or sister in need but shows no compassion—how can God’s love be in that person?

By meeting this need we are sharing the love of God.

If you are not in our community, there are needs in your area that you can and should meet.  Look around.  Find a need and meet it.

If you are in our area, please join me in this rally.  Or help support this project for a homeless shelter by giving, speaking up, volunteering and doing something about it.

I truly believe this is part of my calling from God.  Won’t you join me?

Matthew 25:40  NLT

And the King will say, ‘I tell you the truth, when you did it to one of the least of these my brothers and sisters, you were doing it to me!’

Have you heard of EDITH BURNS?

Edith Burns was a wonderful Christian who lived in San Antonio, Texas . She was the patient of a doctor by the name of Will Phillips. Dr. Phillips was a gentle doctor who saw patients as people. His favorite patient was Edith Burns.  One morning he went to his office with a heavy heart and it was because of Edith Burns.  When he walked into that waiting room, there sat Edith with her big black Bible in her lap earnestly talking to a young mother sitting beside her.  Edith Burns had a habit of introducing herself in this way: "Hello, my name is Edith Burns.  Do you believe in Easter?" Then she would explain the meaning of Easter, and many times people would be saved.  Dr. Phillips walked into that office and there he saw the head nurse, Beverly. Beverly had first met Edith when she was taking her blood pressure. Edith began by saying,"My name is Edith Burns. Do you believe in Easter?"  Beverly said, "Why yes I do."  Edith said, "Well, what do you ...

wash feet, sharing hope

John 13:4-5,14 NLT  So he got up from the table, took off his robe, wrapped a towel around his waist, 5 and poured water into a basin. Then he began to wash the disciples’ feet, drying them with the towel he had around him… 14 And since I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you ought to wash each other’s feet. Jesus set the example we follow.  He served.  He valued and gave value to others.  That is why we choose to serve. For 18 years our church has shared an outreach called back2school, and for 16 of those years we have chosen to give students brand new shoes and socks as well as washing their feet.  It is one of the most important parts of this event. Washing feet is a humbling experience where both the give and the receiver learn how to share some moments that might change their lives.  Jesus said we should do this.  See the verse above.  Follow His example, do what He did, and give far more than you will ever know....
