how did you hear? Mary, the mother of Jesus

How did you hear?

There are lots of things in life that we don’t understand.  In fact, some of those things go far beyond what we think is possible.

Mary, the mother of Jesus. was one of those cases.  She was pregnant but had never had sex.  She was chosen to give birth to the child sent by God who would be the savior or messiah sent from God.

The story is a bit out there.  Her story doesn’t line up with what is scientifically possible or even reality.  Yet God can do anything, and His plan for humanity included a few miracles.  How did Mary hear about what was going to happen?

It was an angel sent by God with a message for Mary.  This visit wasn’t common place, and it even brought some fear and uneasiness to Mary.  She was young.  She was engaged to be married.  Who would believe her story or what she had been told or that she met with an Angel?

Luke 1:26-38  NLT

In the sixth month of Elizabeth’s pregnancy, God sent the angel Gabriel to Nazareth, a village in Galilee, 27 to a virgin named Mary. She was engaged to be married to a man named Joseph, a descendant of King David. 28 Gabriel appeared to her and said, “Greetings, favored woman! The Lord is with you!” 29 Confused and disturbed, Mary tried to think what the angel could mean. 30 “Don’t be afraid, Mary,” the angel told her, “for you have found favor with God! 31 You will conceive and give birth to a son, and you will name him Jesus. 32 He will be very great and will be called the Son of the Most High. The Lord God will give him the throne of his ancestor David. 33 And he will reign over Israel forever; his Kingdom will never end!” 34 Mary asked the angel, “But how can this happen? I am a virgin.” 35 The angel replied, “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. So the baby to be born will be holy, and he will be called the Son of God. 36 What’s more, your relative Elizabeth has become pregnant in her old age! People used to say she was barren, but she has conceived a son and is now in her sixth month. 37 For the word of God will never fail.” 38 Mary responded, “I am the Lord’s servant. May everything you have said about me come true.” And then the angel left her.

The angel said this was going to happen.  That is not something that the normal person will understand, let alone believe.  What do we hear in the conversation Mary had with the Angel Gabriel who told Mary what was ahead?

She was favored by God.  She has been chosen, and this thing about to happen would change her and change the world.

She was about to experience a miracle like no one had ever experienced before.  How can she have a baby in away that no one has had a baby before?

Not long after meeting the Angel and hearing about Jesus’ coming soon Mary said something that I think you and I ought to say to God.  She said, “I am the Lord’s servant.  May everything you have said about me come true.”  Literally, she said I am willing to be a part.

Let’s follow what Mary heard.  Let’s believe what God did.  Let’s tell others what God has said.  It will literally change our lives and the lives of the people we spend time with.

Christian is about passing on the story of Jesus.  Celebrate what Jesus did.  it all began when Mary heard from an Angel about a miracle God had planned.  There were some strange days ahead.  There were some awesome and life changing times ahead!

Have yourself a very Merry Christmas, and may the Lord Jesus Christ be the meaning to your life each and every day!

Have you heard of EDITH BURNS?

Edith Burns was a wonderful Christian who lived in San Antonio, Texas . She was the patient of a doctor by the name of Will Phillips. Dr. Phillips was a gentle doctor who saw patients as people. His favorite patient was Edith Burns.  One morning he went to his office with a heavy heart and it was because of Edith Burns.  When he walked into that waiting room, there sat Edith with her big black Bible in her lap earnestly talking to a young mother sitting beside her.  Edith Burns had a habit of introducing herself in this way: "Hello, my name is Edith Burns.  Do you believe in Easter?" Then she would explain the meaning of Easter, and many times people would be saved.  Dr. Phillips walked into that office and there he saw the head nurse, Beverly. Beverly had first met Edith when she was taking her blood pressure. Edith began by saying,"My name is Edith Burns. Do you believe in Easter?"  Beverly said, "Why yes I do."  Edith said, "Well, what do you ...

wash feet, sharing hope

John 13:4-5,14 NLT  So he got up from the table, took off his robe, wrapped a towel around his waist, 5 and poured water into a basin. Then he began to wash the disciples’ feet, drying them with the towel he had around him… 14 And since I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you ought to wash each other’s feet. Jesus set the example we follow.  He served.  He valued and gave value to others.  That is why we choose to serve. For 18 years our church has shared an outreach called back2school, and for 16 of those years we have chosen to give students brand new shoes and socks as well as washing their feet.  It is one of the most important parts of this event. Washing feet is a humbling experience where both the give and the receiver learn how to share some moments that might change their lives.  Jesus said we should do this.  See the verse above.  Follow His example, do what He did, and give far more than you will ever know....
