claiming God's promises

Today’s e-devotion is actually from the Navigators Daily devotion by LeRoy Eims from earlier this week.  I know this will encourage you as it did me…

2 Peter 1:4

He has given us his very great and precious promises, so that through them you may participate in the divine nature and escape the corruption in the world caused by evil desires.

Today’s passage contains a promise: “Every valley shall be raised up, every mountain and hill made low; the rough ground shall become level, the rugged places a plain. And the glory of the Lord will be revealed, and all mankind together will see it. For the mouth of the Lord has spoken” (Isaiah 40:4-5).

For several years I have claimed that promise for Harvard University and Camp Pendleton, the U.S. Marine base on the West Coast. Why those two places? I know men in both places who are sharing the gospel and working to produce disciples of Jesus Christ. A second reason is that these two places are almost exact opposites, but they’re both part of the harvest field in which Christ has called us to labor.

Here’s how I claim this promise in prayer: In the margin of my Bible next to Isaiah 40:4, I’ve written the names of several spiritual mountains that keep people from turning to God–conceit, pride, prejudice against the Bible, stubbornness, rebellion, indifference, apathy, ignorance of the true nature of the gospel, love of sin, and fear of commitment–and I pray that these “mountains” will be made low. I ask the Lord to overcome these obstacles in the hearts of the people who are hearing the gospel. Then I take the monthly prayer letters I receive from my friends and pray for people by name.

Have you ever prayed in this way for your own city, neighborhood, relatives, friends, and coworkers? I challenge you to start today. The Lord calls us to cooperate with Him through our personal witness and prayer.

Prayer - Lord, I want to help someone find the way into Your kingdom. Would You please bring down the spiritual mountain that prevents him from seeing my love and concern for him? Amen.

To Ponder - God delights in blessing our prayers in a mighty way.

Have you heard of EDITH BURNS?

Edith Burns was a wonderful Christian who lived in San Antonio, Texas . She was the patient of a doctor by the name of Will Phillips. Dr. Phillips was a gentle doctor who saw patients as people. His favorite patient was Edith Burns.  One morning he went to his office with a heavy heart and it was because of Edith Burns.  When he walked into that waiting room, there sat Edith with her big black Bible in her lap earnestly talking to a young mother sitting beside her.  Edith Burns had a habit of introducing herself in this way: "Hello, my name is Edith Burns.  Do you believe in Easter?" Then she would explain the meaning of Easter, and many times people would be saved.  Dr. Phillips walked into that office and there he saw the head nurse, Beverly. Beverly had first met Edith when she was taking her blood pressure. Edith began by saying,"My name is Edith Burns. Do you believe in Easter?"  Beverly said, "Why yes I do."  Edith said, "Well, what do you ...

wash feet, sharing hope

John 13:4-5,14 NLT  So he got up from the table, took off his robe, wrapped a towel around his waist, 5 and poured water into a basin. Then he began to wash the disciples’ feet, drying them with the towel he had around him… 14 And since I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you ought to wash each other’s feet. Jesus set the example we follow.  He served.  He valued and gave value to others.  That is why we choose to serve. For 18 years our church has shared an outreach called back2school, and for 16 of those years we have chosen to give students brand new shoes and socks as well as washing their feet.  It is one of the most important parts of this event. Washing feet is a humbling experience where both the give and the receiver learn how to share some moments that might change their lives.  Jesus said we should do this.  See the verse above.  Follow His example, do what He did, and give far more than you will ever know....
