happy Valentine's Day

Welcome to Valentine’s Day. Don’t expect some of that sappy, romantic sharing that some might share, or I might have shared in the past. But what you will get today is just a little look at what God says love is all about.

Here we go. Just three different things to help us know real, lasting and incredible love.

1 John 4:18-19 NLT

Such love has no fear, because perfect love expels all fear. If we are afraid, it is for fear of punishment, and this shows that we have not fully experienced his perfect love. 19 We love each other because he loved us first.

The beginning of love is with the one who loves us most. Perfect love that have changed us and will continue to change us.

1 Corinthians 13:4-7 NLT

Love is patient and kind. Love is not jealous or boastful or proud 5 or rude. It does not demand its own way. It is not irritable, and it keeps no record of being wronged. 6 It does not rejoice about injustice but rejoices whenever the truth wins out. 7 Love never gives up, never loses faith, is always hopeful, and endures through every circumstance.

That is what love looks like and what love does. But love is based in and goes between people. Patient and kind, never giving up and full of faith. May we live in that love.

Philippians 4:8 NLT

And now, dear brothers and sisters, one final thing. Fix your thoughts on what is true, and honorable, and right, and pure, and lovely, and admirable. Think about things that are excellent and worthy of praise.

We trust God. He loves us, and we are to love Him. Choosing to think about the best and perfect things makes life and love so much better.

That is why I share these three things that will make a world of difference in how we love those around us. Love comes from God. Love is perfect because God is perfect. And we are to focus on what is best about life.

One of the most powerful preachers, writers and leaders of our time, in my opinion, is Francis Chan. His first book, Crazy Love , revolutionized my thoughts about God's love as well as my interacting with God. Now it is time for a brand new book from Chan being released tomorrow, September 1st. There are many people, past and present, who get our attention by what they write or say or share. For me C.S. Lewis is one of those. He was a prolific writer who continues to grab the attention of thinkers from many different points of view. Lewis first grabbed my attention when I was in 5 th grader, and our teacher, Mrs. Foy, shared The Chronicles of Narnia with our class. It was a powerful time that this dreamer opened doors to thinking like I had never lived before. He wrote of faith, of far off places and of strong figures who found their character rooted deep in God. C.S. Lewis was born in 1898 and died in 1963, 7 years before I was born. It wasn’t until his 30’s that under the influence of his friend Tolkien that he came to be a Christian.
