Maundy Thursday

Thursday of holy week.  Some refer to this day as Maundy Thursday, and it is one of the biggest, most important and memorable days of the Easter season.

It really is holy Thursday that inaugurated the Lord’s Supper.  Jesus shared with His closest followers the meaning of his body and blood in the foreshadowing of His death that was only hours away.

In that prepared room, where the passover was celebrated, several acts and parts of the conversation left marks on all who heard.

First is the meal itself.  No more is the remembering of former times, but now it is what Jesus did.

1 Corinthians 11:25-26  NLT

In the same way, he took the cup of wine after supper, saying, “This cup is the new covenant between God and his people—an agreement confirmed with my blood. Do this in remembrance of me as often as you drink it.” 26 For every time you eat this bread and drink this cup, you are announcing the Lord’s death until he comes again.

Second is the act of humbling yourself to serve others.  Jesus did that by washing the disciples feet.  He called them to serve others.

John 13:3-4  NLT

So he got up from the table, took off his robe, wrapped a towel around his waist, 5 and poured water into a basin. Then he began to wash the disciples’ feet, drying them with the towel he had around him.

Third is how Jesus called out the one who was to betray Him.  Judas had already started the plan.

Matthew 26:23  NLT

He replied, “One of you who has just eaten from this bowl with me will betray me.

Finally leave that room and move to the Garden scene.  Lots could be talked about here from the disciples who fell asleep to Jesus begin arrested.  But for this e-devotion I focus on the passion of Jesus to do what God sent Him to do.

Matthew 26:39  NLT

He went on a little farther and bowed with his face to the ground, praying, “My Father! If it is possible, let this cup of suffering be taken away from me. Yet I want your will to be done, not mine.”

There is more to Maundy Thursday, but that takes us to see much of the strength that comes from being the one who was sent by God to do what no one else could do.

May we cherish the history of Easter.  May we seek the Savior and share Him with others as we move toward the cross and the resurrection.

Romans 5:6  NLT

When we were utterly helpless, Christ came at just the right time and died for us sinners.

Please join us at The Community Fellowship on Easter Sunday at our Collinsville location for Resurrection celebration at 10:10.  Also please pray for the Cuba mission trip the end of the month.

wash feet, sharing hope

John 13:4-5,14 NLT  So he got up from the table, took off his robe, wrapped a towel around his waist, 5 and poured water into a basin. Then he began to wash the disciples’ feet, drying them with the towel he had around him… 14 And since I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you ought to wash each other’s feet. Jesus set the example we follow.  He served.  He valued and gave value to others.  That is why we choose to serve. For 18 years our church has shared an outreach called back2school, and for 16 of those years we have chosen to give students brand new shoes and socks as well as washing their feet.  It is one of the most important parts of this event. Washing feet is a humbling experience where both the give and the receiver learn how to share some moments that might change their lives.  Jesus said we should do this.  See the verse above.  Follow His example, do what He did, and give far more than you will ever know....

Have you heard of EDITH BURNS?

Edith Burns was a wonderful Christian who lived in San Antonio, Texas . She was the patient of a doctor by the name of Will Phillips. Dr. Phillips was a gentle doctor who saw patients as people. His favorite patient was Edith Burns.  One morning he went to his office with a heavy heart and it was because of Edith Burns.  When he walked into that waiting room, there sat Edith with her big black Bible in her lap earnestly talking to a young mother sitting beside her.  Edith Burns had a habit of introducing herself in this way: "Hello, my name is Edith Burns.  Do you believe in Easter?" Then she would explain the meaning of Easter, and many times people would be saved.  Dr. Phillips walked into that office and there he saw the head nurse, Beverly. Beverly had first met Edith when she was taking her blood pressure. Edith began by saying,"My name is Edith Burns. Do you believe in Easter?"  Beverly said, "Why yes I do."  Edith said, "Well, what do you ...
