two weeks till the cross

Mark 8:31-32  NLT

Then Jesus began to tell them that the Son of Man must suffer many terrible things and be rejected by the elders, the leading priests, and the teachers of religious law. He would be killed, but three days later he would rise from the dead. 32 As he talked about this openly with his disciples, Peter took him aside and began to reprimand him for saying such things.

Two weeks from today is what we call ā€œGood Fridayā€.  What is good about it?

It is the day that we remember how Jesus was taken to and died on the cross.  It was meant for the worst of criminals and not a perfect Savior, yet God let Jesus be placed there.

Jesus willing went to the cross, laid down His life and had your wrongs and mine put on Him.  All this for a purpose.

But that is two weeks from now.  Take a minute today and think the thoughts that maybe the disciples thought.  Jesus said He would have to die.  He would not be with them much longer.  He was sent for this purpose.

Peter even told Jesus to stop talking like that.  We as humans donā€™t get the gravity and the importance of the spiritual things unless we listen and learn.  So what did Jesus say?

John 12:32  NLT

And when I am lifted up from the earth, I will draw everyone to myself.ā€

The cross was coming.  The destiny of His life was only days away, and this happening would cause lots of things to happen.

Matthew 20:26-28  NLT

But among you it will be different. Whoever wants to be a leader among you must be your servant, 27 and whoever wants to be first among you must become your slave. 28 For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve others and to give his life as a ransom for many.

This is what a servant looks like.  Jesus even told the disciples what was going to happen.  They didnā€™t understand, but they were, and we are, to follow the example Jesus set.

John 13:33  NLT

Dear children, I will be with you only a little longer. And as I told the Jewish leaders, you will search for me, but you canā€™t come where I am going.

That is a tough verse but needed.  If we are looking for a king that will rule like the others ā€¦ if we are looking for someone who is going to fill our bank accounts or restock our groceries ā€¦ if we are expecting to have it easy ā€¦ we are looking in the wrong direction.

Two weeks from now we will think about and remember the cross and itā€™s vital place in our lives.  Others need to know.  So, lets think about the cross as we listen and learn from Jesus.  Letā€™s follow His example.

Have you heard of EDITH BURNS?

Edith Burns was a wonderful Christian who lived in San Antonio, Texas . She was the patient of a doctor by the name of Will Phillips. Dr. Phillips was a gentle doctor who saw patients as people. His favorite patient was Edith Burns.  One morning he went to his office with a heavy heart and it was because of Edith Burns.  When he walked into that waiting room, there sat Edith with her big black Bible in her lap earnestly talking to a young mother sitting beside her.  Edith Burns had a habit of introducing herself in this way: "Hello, my name is Edith Burns.  Do you believe in Easter?" Then she would explain the meaning of Easter, and many times people would be saved.  Dr. Phillips walked into that office and there he saw the head nurse, Beverly. Beverly had first met Edith when she was taking her blood pressure. Edith began by saying,"My name is Edith Burns. Do you believe in Easter?"  Beverly said, "Why yes I do."  Edith said, "Well, what do you ...

wash feet, sharing hope

John 13:4-5,14 NLT  So he got up from the table, took off his robe, wrapped a towel around his waist, 5 and poured water into a basin. Then he began to wash the disciplesā€™ feet, drying them with the towel he had around himā€¦ 14 And since I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you ought to wash each otherā€™s feet. Jesus set the example we follow.  He served.  He valued and gave value to others.  That is why we choose to serve. For 18 years our church has shared an outreach called back2school, and for 16 of those years we have chosen to give students brand new shoes and socks as well as washing their feet.  It is one of the most important parts of this event. Washing feet is a humbling experience where both the give and the receiver learn how to share some moments that might change their lives.  Jesus said we should do this.  See the verse above.  Follow His example, do what He did, and give far more than you will ever know....
