God is my rock

Proverbs 3:25-26  NLT

You need not be afraid of sudden disaster or the destruction that comes upon the wicked, 26 for the Lord is your security.  He will keep your foot from being caught in a trap.

Sitting my desk 24 years ago I got a phone call.  On the other end of the phone was a friend, church member and father whose son was missing due to some kind of accident at the Pentagon where his son worked.

Over the next several hours I watched the news, and there wasn’t one accident.  There were four accidents that are now known as 9/11.  The terror of that day really was the fact that things happened in our country that rarely are seen or heard of.  So many lives were lost.

That night there was a gathering at our church where lots of people joined to pray.  Our country has not been the same since, and we continue to pray for those impacted by the horrific events of September 11, 2021.

Turn to the news of this week where a man was murdered while speaking on a college campus in Utah.  It wasn’t a random shooting, but Charlie Kirk was killed for speaking up and sharing what he was passionate about.  Pray for his family and the organization that Kirk led.

Those events and many more lead us to fear and so many emotions.  How we deal with fear and disaster is important.  The verse above says we should not be afraid when disaster strikes.  The Lord is our security and is our hope.  He is our rock.

Psalm 89:26  NLT

And he will call out to me, ‘You are my Father, my God, and the Rock of my salvation.’

An old song comes to my mind and has been playing in my head the last two days, and I want to point you to this truth.  Jesus is our rock and our hope.

“I Go to the Rock” by the Gaither Vocal Band

Where do I go when there's nobody else to turn to?

Who do I talk to when nobody wants to listen?

Who do I lean on when there's no foundation stable?

I go to the rock, I know He's able, I go to the rock, The Lord is the rock

I go to the rock for my salvation

I go to the stone that the builders rejected

I run to the mountain and the mountain, he stands by me

When the Earth all around me is sinking sand

On Christ, the solid rock I stand

When I need a shelter, when I need a friend

I go to the rock

Where do I go, where do I go

When the storms of life are threatening?

Who do I turn to when those winds of sorrows blow?

And is there a refuge in the time of tribulation?…

The Lord is a rock for my salvation

The Lord is the stone that the builders rejected

I run to the mountain and the mountain, he stands by me

When the Earth all around me is sinking sand

On Christ, the solid rock I stand

When I need a shelter, when I need a friend

I go to the rock

If you know the song, maybe if you are as old as I am, that song might just plan in your head.

My point is this, we can go to God, and God will keep us strong and firm in His truth.  No matter what is going on in your life and how you feel about these events I pray we can agree that life is tough.  Life is full of things and times that lead us to be afraid and to be angry.

It is God and God alone that will keep us.  I go to the rock!  How about you?

Psalm 62:5-8  NLT

Let all that I am wait quietly before God, for my hope is in him. 6  He alone is my rock and my salvation, my fortress where I will not be shaken.  7 My victory and honor come from God alone. He is my refuge, a rock where no enemy can reach me. 8 O my people, trust in him at all times. Pour out your heart to him, for God is our refuge.

Have you heard of EDITH BURNS?

Edith Burns was a wonderful Christian who lived in San Antonio, Texas . She was the patient of a doctor by the name of Will Phillips. Dr. Phillips was a gentle doctor who saw patients as people. His favorite patient was Edith Burns.  One morning he went to his office with a heavy heart and it was because of Edith Burns.  When he walked into that waiting room, there sat Edith with her big black Bible in her lap earnestly talking to a young mother sitting beside her.  Edith Burns had a habit of introducing herself in this way: "Hello, my name is Edith Burns.  Do you believe in Easter?" Then she would explain the meaning of Easter, and many times people would be saved.  Dr. Phillips walked into that office and there he saw the head nurse, Beverly. Beverly had first met Edith when she was taking her blood pressure. Edith began by saying,"My name is Edith Burns. Do you believe in Easter?"  Beverly said, "Why yes I do."  Edith said, "Well, what do you ...

wash feet, sharing hope

John 13:4-5,14 NLT  So he got up from the table, took off his robe, wrapped a towel around his waist, 5 and poured water into a basin. Then he began to wash the disciples’ feet, drying them with the towel he had around him… 14 And since I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you ought to wash each other’s feet. Jesus set the example we follow.  He served.  He valued and gave value to others.  That is why we choose to serve. For 18 years our church has shared an outreach called back2school, and for 16 of those years we have chosen to give students brand new shoes and socks as well as washing their feet.  It is one of the most important parts of this event. Washing feet is a humbling experience where both the give and the receiver learn how to share some moments that might change their lives.  Jesus said we should do this.  See the verse above.  Follow His example, do what He did, and give far more than you will ever know....
