reminders of God's work

Joshua 1:7-8  NLT

Be strong and very courageous. Be careful to obey all the instructions Moses gave you. Do not deviate from them, turning either to the right or to the left. Then you will be successful in everything you do. Study this Book of Instruction continually. Meditate on it day and night so you will be sure to obey everything written in it. Only then will you prosper and succeed in all you do.

It is good to be home.  Arrived back in Virginia and home late Monday night after the most recent mission trip to Cuba.  It was a good trip, as I have already shared some with you.

Getting home there was a lot to do and a week full of importunities.  That is where I am going today and in this e-devotion.  Just a little of where I experienced God after getting home.

The verses above reminds me of my calling, and it is vitally important that we are committed to being strong in the Lord and confident in His work.

First and foremost, it is always good to see my wife after being away.  She is an incredible lady and doing some great things.  Plus she keeps our home and family close to her heart and moving forward.

Second and the rest, there was the full week and several long days.  Each one filled with some things that reminded me of why we do what we do.

Tuesday reminded me of how homelessness continues to be an issue in our community and beyond.  I will continue to share the need and seek to meet needs.  Recovery is possible.  This includes addiction to substances an so much more, and our Celebrate recovery ministry demonstrated just how God is working in so many lives.  The testimonies are awesome (church on Sunday will highlight a bit of that).  Wednesday gave me some time in the Word of God and leading the Bible study.  I love, love the discussion around the table and how God is guiding these sweet people I am blessed to be the pastor of.  Thursday gave me an opportunity to serve someone with another partner agency.  Their house was way out in the country.  Reminds me that everyone is important has value.  Thursday also gave me time with some men who are growing in their faith, and I am grateful and praying for them to keep on the path God has them on.  The day ended with a couple of meetings or events.  Back2school is the coolest outreach we do, and the 2026 B2S event is going to be away.  We also got to host an event last night with awesome people from across our region.

Blessed.  That is a great word, feeling and way to live.  This doesn’t make me or our church greater than others.  I just want to always recognize what God is doing, that He is working and that there is more to come.

Were there some challenges along the way?  Oh yes.  A couple of them break my heart due to the hurts people experience and the bad things some do.  But God gives us opportunities to love people, to make a difference and to seek Him.

What is it this week that reminded you that God is good and is working around you?  Now my sweet wife and I are off to see the grand children.  Hope to see many of you on Sunday!

Catalyst ticket arrived

My ticket to the Catalyst Conference, in Atlanta Oct 8-10, just arrived. I'm excited!

Have you heard of EDITH BURNS?

Edith Burns was a wonderful Christian who lived in San Antonio, Texas . She was the patient of a doctor by the name of Will Phillips. Dr. Phillips was a gentle doctor who saw patients as people. His favorite patient was Edith Burns.  One morning he went to his office with a heavy heart and it was because of Edith Burns.  When he walked into that waiting room, there sat Edith with her big black Bible in her lap earnestly talking to a young mother sitting beside her.  Edith Burns had a habit of introducing herself in this way: "Hello, my name is Edith Burns.  Do you believe in Easter?" Then she would explain the meaning of Easter, and many times people would be saved.  Dr. Phillips walked into that office and there he saw the head nurse, Beverly. Beverly had first met Edith when she was taking her blood pressure. Edith began by saying,"My name is Edith Burns. Do you believe in Easter?"  Beverly said, "Why yes I do."  Edith said, "Well, what do you ...

wash feet, sharing hope

John 13:4-5,14 NLT  So he got up from the table, took off his robe, wrapped a towel around his waist, 5 and poured water into a basin. Then he began to wash the disciples’ feet, drying them with the towel he had around him… 14 And since I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you ought to wash each other’s feet. Jesus set the example we follow.  He served.  He valued and gave value to others.  That is why we choose to serve. For 18 years our church has shared an outreach called back2school, and for 16 of those years we have chosen to give students brand new shoes and socks as well as washing their feet.  It is one of the most important parts of this event. Washing feet is a humbling experience where both the give and the receiver learn how to share some moments that might change their lives.  Jesus said we should do this.  See the verse above.  Follow His example, do what He did, and give far more than you will ever know....
