read Proverbs daily

Today’s devotion focuses on something I have asked people to do over the last 2 and half decades.  That is to read one chapter of Proverbs each day.  There are 31 days in most months, and there are 31 chapters in Proverbs (yeah, I know there are only 30 days in April). I ask you to consider starting a new habit tomorrow, May 1st, of reading through Proverbs.  Give it a try for one month.  See how God uses it in your life. I am walking through Proverbs 30 today and will share with you some of the verses and a few thoughts I have had.  Read on, and may God speak volumes from His endless truth. Proverbs 30  NLT 1  The sayings of Agur son of Jakeh contain this message.  I am weary, O God;   I am weary and worn out, O God. Just be honest with God.  He knows before you tell Him, but God honors humility. 5   Every word of God proves true.   He is a shield to all ...

prayer

Ephesians 1:18-23  NLT I pray that your hearts will be flooded with light so that you can understand the confident hope he has given to those he called—his holy people who are his rich and glorious inheritance. 19 I also pray that you will understand the incredible greatness of God's power for us who believe him. This is the same mighty power 20 that raised Christ from the dead and seated him in the place of honor at God's right hand in the heavenly realms. 21 Now he is far above any ruler or authority or power or leader or anything else—not only in this world but also in the world to come. 22 God has put all things under the authority of Christ and has made him head over all things for the benefit of the church. 23 And the church is his body; it is made full and complete by Christ, who fills all things everywhere with himself. That is one of the most powerful prayers in the Bible.  What makes it even more powerful is that the first verse is ...

questions on quarantine and Scripture

Hey friends.  Today’s devotion is a little different.  I am pushing a passage of John’s Gospel to you.  Read these verses, all from The Message translation of the Bible, that means much to me. Many are thinking about the transition from being closed and quarantined to open for business.  That means so many different things to us all.  There are so many questions that have to be answered.  What I have come to realize as I listen and read and seek God’s wisdom is that I realize how much I need, I mean we, need God. He has a plan.  So, let’s stay connected to God no matter what.  He is in control.  He will get us through all of this. Read these 16 verses and make sure to stay a little longer on the parts that grab your attention. John 15:1-16  MSG “I am the Real Vine and my Father is the Farmer. He cuts off every branch of me that doesn’t bear grapes. And every branch...

faith and works

I have been preached through the book of James for the last few months.  We are moving slowly through the verses and seeking God for understanding.  It is an amazing book with huge insight. My life verse is James 1:5 which reminds us to ask God for wisdom.  The theme of the book, and verses I learned as a teenager, are James 1:2-4 that reminds us to choose joy in the middle of trials always sticks out to me.  The first chapter ends with verse 27 telling us about the best ministry is to those who cannot repay when we serve them, speaking of orphans and widows. Yesterday’s message is one of the tough ones because for centuries people have been arguing that James speaks up that works are a part of salvation in contrast to what the Apostle Paul talks about with being saved only coming through faith. It is a tough passage at the end of chapter 2, but getting a good understanding is a big help to living by faith! James 2:15-17,26 ...

some of my tools

2 Corinthians 9:10  NASB For God is the one who provides seed for the farmer and then bread to eat. In the same way, he will provide and increase your   resources and then produce a great harvest of generosity in you. Over the last few weeks with all the differences we are dealing with our family has tried some things that are new for us.  Family meals aren’t new, but we have done many of those.  We have also had some game nights.  Those are new. One Fridays, since I am working most other days, we have taken on a few projects.  One week we cleaned out the closet in our carport.  It looks a lot better, and that closet gets cleaned out every couple years.  The week before my wife cleaned out the laundry room which really means we have more room for extra stuff.  Last Friday we conquered the shed in our backyard.  It hadn’t been cleaned out since we moved in almost 13 years ago....

meet a need today

1 John 3:17  NASB But whoever has the world’s goods, and   sees his brother in   need   and closes his heart against him, how does the   love   of God abide in him? Things sure are different these days.  Some people are at home and not working while others work a modified schedule or even work more.  Restaurants are closed for everything other than pick up.  Many businesses are closed.  So many people are struggling.  That hurts my heart. I continue to hear stories of people who are in difficult situations.  There are business owners having a hard time with the small business loans and not getting any assistance, and then there are those who have gotten help or their business is still strong.  That also hurts my heart. Honestly, the biggest piece that hurts my heart are the people who fall through the cracks and cannot get help.  Yes and most of the time t...
